This amphitheatre, built in 70 BC, is the oldest of its type still preserved today, and stands in what was previously a residential area. Two double flight staircases provided access to the upper levels, with access to the other levels being via corridors. Just prior to entering the arena a small room opened off the walkway which may have been used as a spoliarium, the place where the corpses of slain gladiators were taken to be stripped of their arms and armour, and as a sanarium, or infirmary
