2/3rds of UK voters think immigration is rising, when data indicates that net migration is falling. This can be partially be explained by the salience of the issue of small boat crossings, often by people who eventually, successfully claim asylum in the UK. Many people perceive small boat crossings as carrying a higher volume of people than they actually do. Small boat arrivals make up 5% of total immigration in the past year.
