Before the widespread use of chemical herbicides, farmers planted their corn using a check corn planter which spaced the corn plants in such a way they can be cultivated in one direction and then cultivated again in a perpendicular direction, eliminating weeds on all sides of the corn plants. A group of southern Iowa farmers used a checked corn planter a few years ago. Here, Paul Bishop explains how the planter works and then demonstrates it in action.
