For more than six weeks, Marines and U.S. Army Soldiers fought alongside coalition partners to clear the city of insurgents. The street-to-street and house-to-house fighting was some of the most intense combat of the Iraq War, and led to acts of exceptional courage by Marines and Soldiers. Second Battle of Fallujah begins in Iraq On 8 November 2004, the largest military operation since the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom got underway just after sunset as thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops pushed into the insurgent-held city of Fallujah.
